Berks Parents Services Collaborative

 

Berks Parents

Berks Parents Services Collaborative (BPSC) is a maternal addictions program for Berks County women funded by the Council On Chemical Abuse and Community Care Behavioral Health. The goal of the program is to reduce the number of infants born exposed to alcohol and other drugs by providing intensive case management services to mothers. The BPSC staff attempts to empower, educate and link pregnant and postpartum substance abusing women to drug and alcohol treatment and other social service agencies. By attempting to reduce the risk of child abuse and neglect, the BPSC Program helps to initiate the process of recovery from substance abuse.

 

We have over 70 women with 200 children utilizing BPSC services which include case management services, assessment and service planning, outreach services, educational and life skills groups, transportation and access to child care services. BPSC, in conjunction with 40 other agencies, helps to improve the quality of life for the women and their children.

 

A Collaborative Committee, made up of agency representatives from CHOR, the Council on Chemical Abuse, Berks County Children and Youth Services, the two local hospitals, treatment and other social service providers, meets on a bi-monthly basis to discuss and share concerns regarding clients’ access to drug and alcohol treatment and other services.  

 

BPSC Client Success Stories

Nancy was a client in BPSC for 2 ½ years. During that time she became pregnant and stopped using drugs and alcohol because of her pregnancy. Although she delivered several weeks early due to pre-eclampsia, her baby was born healthy.  

 

Nancy did relapse twice during her time in BPSC, however she did continue attending treatment and AA meetings. While working part-time and caring for her daughter, Nancy completed trade school and is now employed full time. Her determination and motivation has helped her complete her goals.
